Sunset on Harrison's

7/7/2013
Indianola, IA

Harrison's Variety, a now defunct sporting goods store on the Indianola town square. Would make a nice gift for somebody named "Harrison," wouldn't it?

Road Work Ahead

Taken 7/7/2013
Des Moines, IA

Every day for several weeks I drove by this sign on 48th on my way home from work. And every day I'd chuckle at it for still not being turned right-side-up. Consider some sort of commentary on the incompetence of city employees if you like. Me, I just find it amusing.

Harbach & Sons Co.

Taken 6/16/2013
Des Moines, IA

Just south of MLK on 5th, the Harbach & Sons Co. Factory building. What they made, I don't know. Why somebody thought sprucing the building up by painting green stripes on the front would work, I don't know.

Bull Durham Smoking Tobacco

7/14/2013
Colfax, IA

As mentioned in The Rusty Door, I was in Colfax attempting to photograph this Bull Durham Smoking Tobacco sign painted on the side of the Briggs Building. Not all that satisfied with the way the pics came out, but since it's a cool sign I'm posting it anyway. Will head to Colfax again sometime to attempt a reshoot with hopefully better results, though it's tough to get a decent angle with a relatively clean shot.

God Bless America

 7/7/15

God Bless America by John Seward Johnson II takes one of my favorite paintings, Grant Wood's American Gothic, and turns its two dimensional subjects into a 25 foot tall three dimensional sculpture. Currently on display on the Simpson College campus in Indianola until the end of the year.

Fun Fact: The painting is of a farmer and his daughter, not a farmer and his wife.

The Rusty Door

7/13/2013
Colfax, IA

While attempting to find a better angle to shoot a huge Bull Durham Smoking Tobacco sign painted on the side of an old building in Colfax (that'll be posted later) I wandered down an alley. And came across this secretive rusty door. With no way of opening it from the outside...
